Fire Department Training Activity

December 12, 2025

On Saturday, December 13, 2025, the Harmony Volunteer Fire Department will be conducting a training burn on John Deere Lane in Harmony, NC. As part of this training, fire hydrants in the area may be used for an extended period.

As a result, customers in the surrounding area may experience:

  • Temporary low water pressure

  • Possible discolored (dingy) water

To help reduce the likelihood of discoloration, Iredell Water Corporation performed proactive water main flushing on Thursday, December 11, 2025. While this step helps, temporary discoloration is still possible due to the high water flows required during fire training activities.

What to Do If You Experience Discolored Water

If you notice dingy or discolored water:

  • Run cold water only from a faucet (preferably a bathtub or outside spigot) until the water runs clear.

  • Do not use hot water until the discoloration clears, as this can draw sediment into your water heater.

  • If discoloration persists after flushing, please contact us.

Is Discolored Water Safe?

Yes. Discolored water is typically caused by naturally occurring iron and manganese which are present in the water systems. These minerals can be stirred up during high-flow events such as hydrant use for fire protection, training, water main breaks, or planned system flushing. While the appearance may be unpleasant, it does not pose a health risk and meets all applicable Safe Drinking Water standards.

Need Assistance?

If you experience ongoing issues of dingy water or have concerns, please contact us directly:

  • Emergency Line (after hours): 704-876-0673

  • Office (business hours): 704-876-0672

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we support our fire departments training while continuing to operate and maintain a safe reliable water system for our community.
