URGENT: Prepare Now – Extremely Cold Weather Expected Over the Next Week

January 23, 2026

With a winter storm expected this weekend and extremely cold temperatures forecast into the single digits next week, Iredell Water urges all customers to take immediate steps to protect water lines and meters. Extended periods of freezing temperatures significantly increase the risk of frozen pipes, burst lines, and service interruptions.

Customers should check any unoccupied homes or buildings, especially where the water is on, but heat is not being maintained, or power is off. If a property is vacant, ensure heat is provided, the water is properly shut off, and the interior lines are drained.

Frozen pipes can result in significant damage and costly repairs. A few simple precautions can help reduce that risk.

Protect Your Water Lines and Meter
• Let faucets drip during extreme cold, especially on exterior walls.
• Insulate exposed pipes in crawl spaces, garages, attics, and near foundation vents.
• Close foundation vents to prevent cold air from entering crawl spaces.
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate.
• Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses and shut off exterior faucets if possible.
• Ensure water meter lids are securely in place. This is especially important for new construction sites and vacant homes. In our climate, ground warmth is sufficient to protect meters only if the lid is in place and the box is properly backfilled.

Frozen meters are costly, and customers who leave meters exposed may be subject to a minimum $450 replacement fee.

• Backfill around meter boxes where service lines were recently installed or repaired.

Why Pipes Freeze
When water freezes, it expands, placing extreme pressure on pipes.

Pipes most at risk include:
• Outdoor hose bibs
• Pipes in unheated areas
• Exposed crawl-space lines
• Water meter boxes with missing or unsecured lids

If Your Pipes Freeze
1. Shut off the main water supply immediately.
If you remove the meter lid to access the valve, replace the lid promptly, even if the water is off.
2. Open faucets connected to the frozen line to relieve pressure.
3. Thaw pipes safely using a hair dryer, heat lamp, or space heater.
Do not use open flames.
4. Check for leaks after thawing. If leaks are found, keep the water off and contact a licensed plumber.

Iredell Water cannot locate or repair frozen pipes on private plumbing systems. If, after checking your plumbing, you believe the issue involves the meter or utility service line, contact Iredell Water at 704-876-0672 or after-hours 704-876-0673.

If the issue is determined to be on the customer’s side, a minimum service fee of $35 during business hours or $75 after hours will apply.

Taking action now can prevent damage, service interruptions, and unnecessary costs. Thank you for helping protect your water service during this upcoming winter weather.
